We may see waves once again in Long Beach, if our local Congresswoman gets her wishes. Rep Laura Richardson is trying to get $30,000 of federal funding to finish stage one of Long Beach breakwater’s reconnaissance study according to the Long Beach Press-Telegram. The money would help finish the study on removing part of the articifical breakwater at Long Beach Hardbor.
The 2.5 mile Long Beach Breakwater has been federally owned under the control of the Army Corps of Engineers since 1941. The breakwatver prevents significant waves from hitting city beaches, where they were once world famous for surfing.
The Surfrider Foundation, along with other environmental groups, are attempting to remove the rocks from the eastern section, and return waves to most of the beach and increase ocean currents in the artificial port. This would also help flush out water pollution from the Los Angeles River.
The breakwater is presumed to help reduce the risk of flooding in the Belmont Shore area, as well as along the Peninsula and Naples Island.
