Long Beach- This last weekend the LBPD had a crackdown on drunk driving, and have released the data. The citywide crackdown is known as “DUI saturation patrol”, and was conducted from 6pm on June 19 until 2 am June 20. They had an additional 9 police officers on duty looking out for drivers that seem to be driving while impaired/under the influence. The results of the crackdown were 4 drivers being arrested on suspicion of DUI, 4 cars being towed for driving on a suspended or invalid drivers license, and 75 drivers got traffic citations. Drunk driving causes a death in the United States every 30 minutes, and needs to be minimized. The funding for the extra police officers was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic safety via the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

If you are driving in San Juan Capistrano on Saturdayfrom 7p.m. to 3 a.m., June 27, be prepared to be stopped by Orange County Sheriff’s Department. They will have a DUI and driver’s license checkpoint.
The sheriffs will have a “zero-tolerance” approach when it comes to driving under the influence of alcohol.
The major purpose of traffic safety checkpoints is to find drivers who are operating their vehicle without a drivers license, as well as drivers who are under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. DUI checkpoints are used to try and reduce the number of people killed and injured in alcohol related accidents, in addition to educating the public on the dangers of driving under the influence.

A case like this one against Cleveland Brown’s receiver Donte Stallworth brings up the question about how serious our judges and prosecutors take drunk driving. Early one morning in March Stallworth hit and killed Mario Reyes, 59, who was running across a Miami causeway. He pleaded guilty to the charges in court on Tuesday, and what was his sentance? 30 days in jail, 10 years probation, 1000 hours of community service, and a “bar” on his driving license for life. There were some special circumstances, like the fact that Reyes was jaywalking, but not enough for such a light sentance. Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle pointed to previous community involvement, his clean driving record, and said “this is what Reyes family wanted.” Their feeling may have been influenced by the financial settlement reached between Stallworth and the family of Reyes.
While it is important to take into consideration the family of the victims, it is our judges job to keep the community safe from incidents like this one. Judgements like this one are more common then people would believe. Luckily NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell felt very strongly about the issue, and has suspended Donte Stallworth from playing in the NFL indefinitely.

Monticello- Police say that a man from Monticello tried to get away from police by jumping out of the patrol car and hoping into a taxi, all while wearing handcuggs. He was in the back of the patrol car because he was arrested for driving while intoxicated Saturday morning. He was originally stopped around 12:45 a.m., on Bedford Avenue for driving the wrong direction on a one way street. While driving back to the police station the officers got a call about a fight outside of the Vino Bar on Broadway, which was the opportunity Joshua Lopez, 24, was waiting for. While the cops were dealing with a man on the ground and several unruly customers, an unidentified person unlocked the patrol car. Once he was out he tried to get into the taxi cab that was parked behind the police car. Cops found Lopez hiding on the groun behind the cab. He was later charged with misdemeanor DWI, escape and obstructing government administration, as well as being issued several traffic tickets.

Everyone knows during summer the best outdoor concerts come around. At the top of the list is the famous Vans Warped Tour. They have been going strong for over a decade, and still bring the best bands all around America. We are proud to say we are in talks with them to provide a booth where our FDA approved breathalyzer will be available for concert goers to use to test themselvs. We are hopefully going to be at all 4 Southern California dates, check back soon for exact details and show your support!!
We are proud to say we have placed another breathalyzer into a bar. The Sportsman in Los Alaminotos contacted us recently, and we went in and placed a breathalyzer last week. In that week it has done more business then any of our other machines, which is great! The owner of the bar loved the idea, and wanted to provide a positive example to the surrounding communities, and has asked us to place them in 2 other bars that he owns. After our fundraiser this Friday at Shore Ultra Lounge we are hoping to be able to provide them with our BAC awareness tool. Stay tuned for more news!

It is no suprise that fraternitiesand sororities like to drink, but it may be a suprise to people that they are trying to be active against drunk driving. The Kappa Sigma fraternity house in UC Irvine has contacted us and we are going to place a breathalyzer into their house during the school year. They are showing initiative by being active in the communnity to try and reduce alcohol related accidents. The UC Irvine chapter heard about our breathalyzers after we placed one in the CSULB Chapters frat house. This fraternity is leading by example to the other frats and sororities, and helping to spread the use of breathalyzers as “prevention not prosecution tools”. Keep up the good work guys, you ARE saving lives and making a difference.
We are gaining more momentum every day, thanks to everyone who is helping us get the word out there. We are excited to say that our CEO Nicholas Grond is going to be interviewed on the Kevin and Bean show on KROQ tomorrow (Thur, June 18). He is going to be talking about our upcoming fundraiser/Guinness World Record attempt. We are attempting to break the record for “largest group to simultaneously take a shot”. The current record is 1300 people in Germany taking a shot of corn schnapps (gross). We have setup the fundraiser at Long Beach’s hottest new club, Shore Ultra Lounge. The Sparkles Angels shot girls sponsored our event, and have donated 1500 FREE shots in test tubes for everyone that comes to the event. The tubes are yours to keep, and say that you were part of a “world record group shot” . Also, as everyone comes in we will get your name and e-mail so once we get everything finalized with Guinness World Records, we will e-mail you the certificate of authenticity.
As reported by Science Daily today ( 6/15/09), having a drink “quickly go to your head” is an accurate desription. Researchers in the city of Heidelberg recently put this to the test. They had their test patients consume an amount of alcohol that would be equal to a few beers, or about 2 glasses of wine, and proved that only 6 minutes later the brain was reacting to the alcohol. The patients were up to a level of about .05 or .06% BAC (blood alcohol concentration. The scientist helped to prove that changes were taking place in the brain cells by placing the test subjects into a magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS). This is important because the only data that was previously available on the subject was done in animal trials.

The attorney for the Riverside County man being charged with 3 counts of second degree murder in a crash that killed Angels up and coming pitcher Nick Adenhart is trying to get a change of venue. He wants the case to be taken out of its current Orange County venue. Randall Longwith, the attorney for the accused Andrew Gallo, said “the emotion is so heavy, in Orange County”, and doesnt believe he will get a fair trial.
At his arraignment on Monday, Gallo entered a plea of not guilty. Jon Wilhite, 24 year old from Manhattan Beach, was present at the arraignment in his wheelchair, after being hurt in the crash. A pretrial hearing was schedules for July 31 by Superior Court Judge David A. Thompson. Under age drinking was the main problem involved in the more then 100 alcohol related arrest made at the Bama Jama music festival in Enterprise, Alabama. According to Lt. Jean Turner of the Alabama Beverage Control, 124 of the 139 arrests involved someone under the age of 21 drinking. One of the worst incidents involved a person pulling a knife on an ABC agent. Kara Braxton, center for the Detroit Shock’s, will be suspended for six games after pleading guilty to a DUI charge from the off season. The announcement was made by the league yesterday. This could be good news for the LA Sparks, since they are playing the defending champions Shocks tomorrow. Braxton averaged just under 9 points, and just over 5 rebounds in her 33 games last year. This wasnt a first for Braxton, who was suspended for 2 games in 2007 for a seperate drunk driving incident. She still managed to be an all star that year. Barbara Farris signed on as a free agent about a week ago, and is expected to replace Braxton while she is suspended.
